The present work aims at performing a theoretical study on the influences of psychic transmission over the desire for having children for men and women. For such, a bibliographic assessment about the theme was performed, based on the psychoanalitical approach and contributions from sistemic authors, taking unconcious beliefs, construction of subjectiveness, generational aspects, and both paternity and maternity motivations into consideration. It is realized that the motivations related to the desire for having children are diferente for each subject and contexto which were assessed, and that the transmission of a generational heritage may be considered na important aspect for the transition into parenthood. A lack of works which relate the masculine figure to the desire for having children is observed, and such fact indicates a need for research on the desire for having children in men. The conclusion is that psychic transmission influences the construction of individual subjectivities, as well as the interference of cultural and social patterns. Therefore, the family therapeutic space must provide transformations in the face of the generational legacy, for the constitution of a new singularity and identity.
